SeanBranagh.ie
OK, So what is seanbranagh.ie?
Me
Seanbranagh.ie is, as it would appear, a website. What may be even more obvious than that is the fact that it is a website created by me, Sean Branagh. I have created this site for several reasons which I will explain. I will also use this opportunity to express a few of my beliefs about the internet and the World Wide Web. First I will tell you who I am. My name is obviously Sean Branagh and I am from Ireland hence the .ie domain name which I had some difficulty obtaining. I have learned quite a bit from the internet over the years. It was in fact self teaching from the internet that earned me my job in computer networking. I feel that I should put some of that knowledge back on the internet for others to hopefully gain from my experience. That is essentially the first reason for the existence of this site. The second reason for building this site is because I can. This leads me to explaining my opinions and beliefs about the internet.

Contrary to popular belief the internet and the World Wide Web (www) are not the same thing. The World Wide Web is all of the websites like this one whereas the internet is the platform on which the World Wide Web and many other services exist. Email, file sharing and online gaming are just a few of the other services that exist on the internet. As far as I am aware most internet usage worldwide is made up of file sharing and military use but please correct me if I am wrong. To avoid confusion I will continue to use the term "internet" in place of "world wide web".

Many people view the internet as a place that is full of evil and pornography which for over 60% is the case. Therefore understandably many view the internet as a bad thing. I however see this very differently. Although I stress that I do not agree with a very large amount of the content on the internet, I strongly support the fact that it can exist. It is the ultimate tool in freedom of speech. I, or anyone else can express their unedited opinions to the world instantly. Yes, there obviously are consequences to this, not least terrorism and child pornography. I again stress that I completely condemn this content and those who post it. I am only in support of the fact that people can express unedited opinions.
I believe that it is up to every internet user to educate and protect themselves and more importantly, their children from such content as that mentioned above or any other content they may see as unsavory.

Whether we like it or not the internet is a 100% accurate, unedited reflection of us as a race, which is why I personally think it is the greatest invention of our time. This leads me onto another reason for building this site.

Many people in life have a goal to buy a house and own their very small part of the world in which we live. As well as this I also wanted to have my very own small part of the virtual world in which we now also live. I was not happy by just renting a small amount of space on a web server. I wanted to physically own my very own web server here in my house. To do this I spent about 50 pounds on eBay and bought myself the bits and pieces that would become "Sideburns", my Linux web server. I also spent quite a bit of time teaching myself Linux. After all this was said and done I needed a website to host on Sideburns, hence seanbranagh.ie.
If you are reading this page then myself and Sideburns have done our jobs. All of the geeky technical stuff about this operation and other projects can be found in the computing sections of this site.

Sideburns

There is another reason for this site which I touched on earlier. As I learned most of what I know about this subject from the internet, I decided to put some of it back for others to hopefully benefit from.

Satellite Dishes

Aswell as the information about computers, networking and the internet I would like to share, there is one other main area with which I am interested and have some knowledge of.
That is digital television. I have gained knowledge in this area from employment, my own interest/experience and of course from the internet. Although my knowledge would mainly be in the area of digital satelite television, I do have some knowledge of terrestrial broadcasting also, mainly from Belfast's "Divis" transmitter.
All of this information can of course be found in the digital TV section of this site and I hope some of it will be useful at a time when we all need to be at least thinking about digital tv.

That is a guide to what seanbranagh.ie is and why it exists. I hope you find some of the information useful and interesting. Please feel free to contact me with any corrections, comments or suggestions for the site. Sean.
